New York CNN —Apple Store workers in Towson, Maryland, the first of the tech giant’s retail employees to unionize, made history again by voting late Saturday in favor of authorizing a strike. “We deeply value our team members and we’re proud to provide them with industry leading compensation and exceptional benefits.”The union at the Towson store has not disclosed what date members would strike. Apple employees at the Mall at Short Hills store in New Jersey voted against unionizing on Saturday, according to Bloomberg. The union, known as the Communications Workers of America, alleged Apple engaged in illegal union-busting activity and blamed the defeat on the Apple’s tactics. The labor wave hitting Apple retail stores echoes the mass organizing that began at other influential companies in the United States, such as Starbucks and Amazon.

Economic models buckle under strain of climate reality
  + stars: | 2023-11-22 | by ( Mark John | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +6 min
But detractors say those numbers are the product of economic models that are not fit to capture the full extent of climate damage. A year earlier, the Trump administration cited similar models to justify replacing the Obama-era Clean Power Plan with one allowing higher emissions from coal-burning plants. At issue are the "integrated assessment models" (IAMs) economists use to draw conclusions on anything from output losses to financial risk or the pricing of carbon markets. Line chart with data from Climate Tracker shows varying predictions of global warming damage as percentage of GDP. "Our main message is: 'Economists, speak to climate scientists and come up with results that make sense'," he said.

However, nearly all of its 700 24-hour locations will remain open on Thanksgiving, along with certain distribution centers and other sites including supply chain and centralized teams, Walgreens said. Many big box stores such as Walmart (WMT.N) and Target (TGT.N) are closed on Thanksgiving, but pharmacies and grocery stores typically remain open with adjusted hours. However, CVS and Walgreens had said the work action had minimal impact on their operations, with most stores remaining open.

The organizers of a recent retail pharmacy staff walkout are helping to launch a national push to organize those employees on Wednesday, a potential step to wide-scale unionization of thousands of pharmacists and technicians across the U.S. for the first time. Both Walgreens and CVS also said last week that the walkout of their pharmacy staff last week had a minimal impact on their pharmacy operations. IAM Healthcare and the walkout organizers will then launch unionization campaigns in certain districts or areas with high support for organizing. The Pharmacy Guild hopes to get 100,000 pharmacists and technicians to fill out the form, Jerominski said. He also predicted that 90% of pharmacists working for Walgreens and CVS will be unionized in five years.

New York CNN —Retail pharmacy workers have told CNN that their employers have left them severely overworked and understaffed. The grassroots organizers had difficulty organizing the large-scale walkout without institutional support, and failed to rally pharmacy workers on a significant level. A number of other US unions represent retail pharmacy workers. United Healthcare Workers East represents nearly 5,000 pharmacists and pharmacy techs in hospitals and retail pharmacies. A Boeing 737 MAX-10 lands over the Spirit AeroSystems logo during a flying display at the 54th International Paris Air Show at Le Bourget Airport near Paris, France, June 22, 2023. The new labor agreement will add $80 million to annual costs, Spirit said. In the second quarter, the company absorbed $28.3 million in cost related to the new labor deal as well as $7.3 million in strike disruption charges. However, the strike did impact our production and deliveries, as reflected in earnings and cash flow," Chief Executive Officer Tom Gentile said. Cash burn was $211 million for the three months through June, the company said, compared to $79 million a year earlier.

REUTERS/Benoit Tessier/File PhotoWASHINGTON, June 29 (Reuters) - Spirit AeroSystems (SPR.N) said it would begin resuming operations at its plant in Wichita, Kansas, on Friday, after union workers on Thursday voted to accept a new contract and end a strike that led to a week-long work stoppage. The deal is a boon for Boeing, which is on the verge of increasing MAX production from 31 jets to 38 jets per month. Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stan Deal said on June 18 the production ramp was set to occur "pretty soon." Although Boeing maintains some buffer inventory, analysts had warned a prolonged strike could have forced the company to slow or stop MAX production. The company has been the source of several high-profile production defects on Boeing jets, such the incorrect installation of a bracket on the 737's vertical tail.

Workers at key Boeing supplier vote to end strike

New York CNN —Spirit AeroSystems, a key supplier to Boeing, is set to reopen next week after members of the International Association of Machinists voted Thursday to ratify a tentative labor agreement and end a week-long strike. Members voted 63% in favor of the four-year agreement, according to vote results announced Thursday. It’s the first new contract that the union members at Spirit have had in 13 years. The union had put the company’s previous offer up to a vote earlier this month. But rank and file members rejected that offer with 79% of members voting no, and 85% voted to strike, the union said.

June 27 (Reuters) - Spirit AeroSystems (SPR.N) has presented a new contract offer to union workers at its plant in Wichita, Kansas, after what the Boeing (BA.N) and Airbus (AIR.PA) supplier said were "positive discussions" aimed at ending a strike. Spirit declined to answer questions about its revised offer but confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that it had delivered it "following days of positive discussions" with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union. The IAM union will hold a meeting on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. local time to discuss the new proposal, IAM said on the Facebook page for its local unit in Wichita. The meeting will only be attended by union stewards, Spirit employees that represent the union. The company and union restarted negotiations on Saturday, and Spirit CEO Tom Gentile said in a statement on Monday that the parties were "making good progress."

Union workers missed out on a frenzy of wage increases by employers desperate for workers during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Low unemployment makes it easier for union workers to stand firm during negotiations. Union workers also want more affordable healthcare, paid sick time and more-flexible scheduling for greater work-life balance. Some workers said the base wage increase was insufficient and balked at higher out-of-pocket medical costs. Late last year, U.S. freight railroad workers rejected a five-year contract that included a 24% wage increase, citing lack of paid sick leave.
